School Meals

School meals have been the focus of much interest nationally in recent years. There have been concerns over the nutritional quality of the food provided (including the Jamie Oliver campaign) plus evidence of an increase in child obesity.

The Health Survey England in 2002 found that 16.6% boys and 16.7% girls aged 2-15 were obese and a further 13.6% boys and 14.3% girls were overweight. The Survey also found that most children eat too much fat, added sugar and salt and only eat two of the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

In March 2005 the Secretary of State for Education and Skills announced a package of measures designed to improve significantly the quality of school meals.

These included:

  • New nutritional standards for school food
  • The establishment of a School Food Trust to advise and support
  • Additional funding to authorities & schools of £220m between 2005 & 2008
  • New qualifications for catering staff
  • New arrangements for monitoring food standards through Ofsted
  • priority for the building and refurbishment of kitchens

    Reports

The Trust-e Cashless solution provides a wide range of report information as standard. All activity including sales on the till, payments at the Revaluation units, payments made on the WEB and cheques received in the office are date and time stamped. This gives us the ability to extract any information from the system that you might require. From Product Sales to Meal Uptake to a Full Audit Trail.

    Report examples are:-

  • Day End Summary
  • Meal Numbers
  • Session Splits
  • Cash Reconciliation
  • Cash v Free School Meal Information
  • Meal Service type – Breakfast, Lunch etc
  • Meal User – Student, Teacher, Visitor
  • Meal Numbers – Number of meals taken – Cash paid or Free Meals
  • Transactions – Number of transactions made during meal service
  • Full Audit Trail

Example reports are available on request.

Often when you take a report from a system this leads to more questions instead of actually answering any. It is for this reason that Omron offer an Advanced Pivot Reporting option. This allows the user to quickly and easily drill down through the data to get to the information required.

This initial Pivot shows sales by Class by Month. The Class RED has generated the most amount of income on Catering

We have now asked the Pivot to show us the sales split by Gender. We can now see that in the Red Class the boys have spent the most.

In the final Pivot we have introduced The difference between Cash & Free School Meals.

    Primary and Secondary Schools

Trust-e offers the complete cashless catering solution for Secondary Schools. This simple to use Cashless System provides a host of benefits, including reduced administration, faster lunch time service, full audit trail for incoming monies, powerful reporting tools and increased Meal Take Up.

    Pupil Identification

Your school has the choice of how you identify your pupils. Biometric, Magnetic Card, Smart Card, Photograph and PIN are available. We have ensured that all Becta guidelines have been followed giving you the peace of mind that the solution is right for your school.

    Menu Scheduling

As schools are required to provide more nutritional information within Trust-e future menus can be easily created. Each day the system checks which menu is active and automatically changes the till layout.

    Increase Meal Uptake

The system will calculate the meal uptake and monitor changes and fluctuations in trends. Information included would also incorporate Free School Meal information such as FSM take up and total pupils receiving FSM.

    Full Nutritional Information

Each product can have nutritional information assigned to it. This then allows Nutritional Reporting by pupil.

    BECTA Guidelines

We have followed the advice given by Becta to ensure that the solution that we provide meets the needs of the school, parents and students.

Becta, the Government’s schools ICT agency, sets out clear guidelines on how the Data Protection Act 1998 applies to the use of Biometric data in schools.

  • Biometric systems currently used in schools are based on fingerprint recognition technology. The system works by taking measurements of the fingerprint, but they do not capture a complete image. This means that the original fingerprint cannot be reconstructed from the data.
  • They (supplier) should offer alternative systems for families that want to opt out.
  • Schools cannot use biometric information for any reason other than for the express purpose for which it was collected

To read the guidance go to www.becta.org.uk and search for biometric in the search box.

    EPoS

EPoS – our electronic lunchtime till system

In September 2008, the nutrient-based standards for school lunches become law in primary schools. To ensure that we meet these standards, our school lunch menu has to be nutritionally analysed. Every child taking a school lunch should have the option to have a balanced diet, including certain levels of fish, red meat, vegetables, etc. (having regard to dietary needs, of course). Within a few years, we will be required to report on the take up of the food. Without recording what a child has taken, we have no way of knowing whether certain food types have been taken. You will note that I am using the term ‘taken’ and not ‘eaten’!

Another benefit for the school is that we are able to monitor the catering contract to give us accurate information about the popularity of certain meals, as well as being able to count portions served. I am now able to ask questions of our caterers such as why only 12 portions of a particular choice were served and challenge some of the menu choices.
